Fifty physically challenged children and their families gathered at Shanghai Punan Hospital on Monday to express their gratitude to the doctors who treated them in celebration of China's second Doctors’ Day.

Most of the children suffer from cerebral palsy and have trouble in walking or expressing themselves, but their cases have improved markedly after treatment at the hospital’s specialist center. They presented flowers to doctors and nurses and sang songs for them.

“We wanted to give these doctors a surprise on their special day to say a big thank you for all their efforts,” said Liu, the appreciative parent who planned the event.

“Our kids have undergone great changes for the better and are all delighted to prepare gifts for their favorite doctors and sing a song for them,” she said.

“I hope this activity demonstrates the true depth of our gratitude to the people who gave us a helping hand when we were in greatest need,” she added.

Peng Lei, aged 7, has been treated at the center for almost a year. His mother said his speech has improved a lot and he can walk more steadily than ever before.

Nurse Zhang said they work from 8am to 5pm a day.

“These kids are all my sisters and brothers and today I was deeply touched by their singing,” she said.

Sun Chengyan, director of the recovery team, said: “We are very moved and more determined than ever to provide the best possible services for these patients. This is what our patients expect and what they deserve. We will absolutely do all we can to live up to their expectations,” he said.

The State Council approved a proposal by the Health and Family Planning Commission in November 2017 to honor physicians for their hard work on August 19 each year, and to foster a better understanding and more respect for their invaluable contribution to society.
